STRATHFIELDSAYE yachts-man Glenn Ashby yesterday celebrated a seventh world championship victory in the A-Class catamaran.A silver medallist in the Tornado class at the 2008 Beijing Olympiic Games, Ashby again starred on the waters off Cesenatico in Italy.Going into the final day of racing, which was to include two heats, Ashby led Australian teammate Steve Brewin by two points. After a clear start, Ashby surged to the lead by the top end, with Brewin in fourth place.A previous world champion in the class, Brewin fought back to be second, but Ashby held his lead and drifted over the finish line to clinch another world title. The second of the scheduled races was cancelled because of a lack of breeze.A fleet of more than 100 had raced in light winds for more than a week.“I accepted early light wind was what the weather gods had dealt us and put my thoughts into light weather racing,” Ashby said.“It was super-tough mentally in what were extremely light wind conditions. I was relieved to have gone the right way in the first upwind to defend my lead,” the sailmaker said.“I am really stoked about this win,” he said of a 14th world title. It was a successful defence of the 2009 world championship he won at Belmont, Lake Macquarie.A dual winner of the Bendigo Advertiser Sports Star of the Year award, which is proudly supported by mecu credit union and WIN Television, Ashby has dominated on waters around the world for many years. His amazing record includes being a three-time world champion in the Tornado class, three world titles in F18s, and seven-time Australian champion in the A class. After yesterday’s victory, Ashby was soon packing up and moving on toward next week’s Formula 18 world championships, where he will join forces with James Spithill.Ashby crewed for Darren Bundock in the Tornado multi-hull class at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.A remarkable run for Ashby included a coaching role with the America’s Cup-winning Oracle crew earlier this year.
