THE Bendigo Spirit will know at the end of this month if its protest to block the Sydney Spirit from using the same name has been successful.A meeting in Sydney yesterday between Spirit chairman Jock Clark, general manager Wendy James and Sydney Spirit owner Greg Evans failed to resolve the naming issue. The decision now rests with the National Basketball League's interim board which will meet on July 31."We were given a good hearing and we stood up for our name and the reasons why we want it exclusively," James told The Advertiser yesterday."Greg Evans undertands why we are so upset about it... but we couldn't come to a resolution."They want their club to be known as the Sydney Spirit and we are the Bendigo Spirit."We'll now wait for the board meeting and hope that things go our way."It's risky, but there's just no other way for this to be worked out."Following the demise of the Sydney Kings, the West Sydney Razorbacks relaunched themselves as the Sydney Spirit on Monday. As Sydney's only team in the NBL, the move was made in an effort to unify basketball in the harbour city. This comes despite Bendigo being known as the Spirit in the Women's National Basketball League. The Sydney Spirit move angered the Bendigo Spirit and Basketball Australia hastily arranged a meeting yesterday to try and resolve the problem."This problem shouldn't have got to this process," James said."Sydney was advised they could use the Spirit name. An error has been made and now we've got to sort it out."This naming issue has come at such a vital time for us."We should be using this time to attract sponsors and to make sure everything is organised for the upcoming season."We'll now be using this time to make sure we create as strong a case as we can on the importance of the Bendigo Spirit keeping its name exclusively."James said the Bendigo Spirit wouldn’t be changing its name if the NBL board allowed the Sydney Spirit to keep the Spirit brand."We've been the Spirit since May, 2007, and we won't be moving away from that," James said."If Sydney Spirit stays it will dilute our brand, but we'll still be the Bendigo Spirit."
