Junior bowlers invade Bendigo

THE North Bendigo Bowls Club will this Saturday host 24 state junior players in the annual East West Challenge.Among the 24 competitors will be Bendigo’s Aaron Wilson.Wilson, who was an A1 skipper for Bendigo in the Bendigo District Bowls Association, enjoyed a superb 2008-09 season, which was headlined by his second consecutive victory in the Victorian Under-18 Singles Titles.Wilson was also one of only five Victorians to play in the finals of the 2008 open-age Australian Indoor Singles Championship.He also earned the Cyril Michelsen Trust Fund award in The Advertiser Southern Cross TEN Sports Star of the Year for 2008-09.Wilson’s brother, Nathan, who also plays in the BDBA with Bendigo, will line up in the tournament as well.Saturday’s East West Challenge gives state selectors the opportunity to observe all Victoria’s promising young lawn bowlers at the one venue.Competitors: Winston Brackley (Drysdale), Jerome Coles (North Balwyn), Nathan Collier (Tatura), Sheldon Devlin (Geelong West), Dylan Fisher (Clayton), Callum Hanna (Shepparton Golf), Matthew Higgins (Sale), Stuart Huddle (Cranbourne), Rhys Jeffs (Drysdale), Ben McArthur (Webbcona), Dane McKinnon (Werribee RSL), Mathew O’Brien (Yarra Glen), Ethan Pell (Yarra Glen), Matthew Rennex (Moonee Valley), Gareth Rich (Drouin), Patrick Rowe (Trentham), Brandon Tyers (Coomealla), Anthony Velicki (Lalor), Steven Velicki (Lalor), Tom Vernon (Swan Hill Golf), Chris Watt (Keilor), Aaron Wilson (Bendigo), Nathan Wilson (Bendigo), Aaron Wood (Webbcona).Meanwhile, this Sunday North Bendigo will also host the first Victorian Junior Squad Championship from 10am.Among the squads competing in the championship will be Bendigo, Mid Gipps land, Ovens and Murray, Geelong and Northern.The Bendigo team is: Stephanie Priest, Troy Mansbridge, Aaron Wilson (s).James Oliver, Nathan Morley, Nathan Wilson (s).Aaron Gartside, Lachlan Bowland, Brayden Byrne (s).
