COLIN James will tonight attempt to claim the first grand final victory of a remarkable darts career forged from the confines of a wheelchair.James has competed since 1995 using specialised darts and a blower to compete firstly in Geelong and for the past six years in Bendigo. He believes he is the only blowdarts player competing in open competition in Victoria.“I’ve always been pretty keen in sport one way or another, but obviously in my circumstances it is very hard to get involved, and I saw this as an opportunity to do that,’’ James said.“I’m on the wrong side of 60 and a few people have said it’s a good achievement playing sport at all, but I don’t see it that way, it’s an enjoyable recreation for me and I can take part alongside everyone and hold my own.“I want to encourage more people to get involved because there’s plenty of other people with disabilities around that just sit on their backsides and vegetate instead of doing something.“That’s just not me.’’ James contracted rheumatic fever as a three-year old and the illness soon developed into rheumatoid arthritis. He was soon confined to a wheelchair. The captain of the Captain Cook Hotel side will tonight lead his team into battle in the Bendigo Darts League division three grand final against raging favourites Manchester Tavern.“None of the teams I’ve been part of have actually won a grand final,’’ James said.“I did get into a grand final in Geelong . . . but have never won a grand final.“But I’ve won a few trophies over the years for the highest score and the most number of wins and things like that.“The chances of a win (tonight) are very, very slim to be honest.“The Captain Cook have been fantastic in supporting us, but Manny Tavern are very strong, we have beaten them during the season, but then they beat us in the semi-final.“I think they’ve got the wood on us.’’
