VETERAN Bendigo rifle shooter Geoff Grenfell has broken his own national record after firing a perfect score of 350.53 in the lead-up to the start of today’s National Queen’s Prize in Queensland.Grenfell achieved the perfect score in the two-day President’s Match event, held at the Belmont Rifle Range. As well as scoring 350 out of a possible 350, the 47-year-old also scored 53 centres in what was a remarkable performance. His performance surpassed the previous record he owned of 349, which he set at Belmont in 2006.Despite having to overcome problems with his sight caused by rain, Grenfell ended day one of the competition on Wednesday having scored 200 out of 200 over 300, 500, 600 and 700 yards. He then continued his straight shooting yesterday over distances of 800, 900 and 1000 yards when he shot 150 out of 150.‘‘It’s a really good thrill to get a perfect score, especially considering my shooting this week goes towards Commonwealth Games trials and selections (for 2010),’’ Grenfell said last night.‘‘It was just a matter of taking it one shot at a time.’’ The President’s Match was the start of what shapes up as a hectic schedule at Belmont over the next four days for Grenfell, starting with the prestigious National Queen’s.The National Queen’s Prize, which Grenfell has never won, will be held over the next three days. From there, the top 20 shooters _ taking into account the National Queen’s and President’s Match events _ will then compete in the Royal Kaltapore Cup on Monday. The scores from the National Queen’s, President’s Match and Royal Kaltapore Cup will then determine the grand winner. On Monday, Grenfell, who was the 1994-95 The Advertiser Southern Cross TEN Sports Star of the Year, will also compete in the Australia Cup, which will be shot over 300, 500, 600, 900 and 1000 yards, as well as including a 1000-yard pairs match.‘‘I have got a lot on, so I’m just taking what happened today in my stride,’’ Grenfell said.‘‘But you don’t shoot perfect scores and break records if things aren’t going right.’’
