Castlemaine Football and Netball club will not accept funding in the form of pokies revenue from 2013.
The Bendigo Football and Netball League club has joined forces with new organisation Funded by People not Pokies and will instead source funding for the club elsewhere.
The Magpies general manager Stuart Dunn said the new partnership was a show of community support.
"We are excited to be entering into this historic partnership as it puts the emphasis back on communities having ownership of their club, rather than relying on handouts from pokies generated revenue."
"This isn't about saying people shouldn't play pokies or that there shouldn't be pokies venues at all, it is simply us saying that the community needs to get behind their local clubs to ensure they are viable into the future."
Funded by People not Pokies will help the 153-year-old club generate alternate funding.
"The idea is simple," said spokesman Jeremy Forbes.
"We want to show that clubs can be funded by the community to benefit the community, rather than through gaming revenue that hurts the community.
"Castlemaine Football and Netball Club will be one of the first football clubs in Australia to enter into an agreement that they will not take money from gambling revenue ... (they are) demonstrating how a club can increase community strength and cohesion, and be a real positive force.
"We know that pokies cause social harm, not just to problem gamblers and their families, but through increases in crime and lost taxpayer dollars. They take money from local businesses and strain health services."
