Bendigo FC calls for new nickname

THE search has begun to find a nickname for the Bendigo Football Club.As part of the club’s launch of its new website this week, the BFC also confirmed it will run a nickname competition.The competition will be run until March 16, with the new nickname to be unveiled at the BFC business luncheon on March 30.As of yesterday, the club had received 20 entriesBFC chairman Peter Lodewijks said he had an open mind to the nickname of Bendigo’s VFL club.“Having consigned the Bendigo Bombers nickname to history, the club obviously needs a new nickname and we’re going to make this the subject of a contest,” Lodewijks said yesterday.“We’ve got a very open mind as to what our nickname will be, but we’d be looking for something that Bendigo can get behind and support, and is something that represents us going forward.“Whether it’s an animal or whatever, we just want something that the people of Bendigo can associate with and be proud of.”The concept of a nickname competition was also used as part of the formation of the former Bendigo Diggers during 1997.From hundreds of entries – some from as far away as Queensland – that competition was won by Kay Pearse, who won a trip to London.The winner of this competition will receive a $2000 term deposit at the Bendigo Bank, five nights holiday at the Murray Downs Resort, Swan Hill, and a standard 2012-13 BFC membership.To enter the competition, log onto www.bendigofc.com.au and follow the prompts.In the case of the winning name submitted by multiple persons, a winner will be drawn from those persons● Addy suggestions:LUKE WEST – Bendigo Warriors, Bendigo Eagles, Bendigo Nuggets, Bendigo Stingers, Bendigo Blaze.TRAVIS KING – Bendigo Royals, Bendigo Bulls, Bendigo Gold N Blues, Bendigo Devils, Bendigo Hurricanes.
