IN what could be his last Bendigo District Cricket Association first XI innings, a century from Andrew Hosking has put Kangaroo Flat in the box seat in its round 14 game against White Hills. Hosking is weighing up his playing future beyond this season, but showed his class on Saturday as the 36-year-old made 109 in the Roos’ total of 7-273 at Integrating Technology Oval.Saturday was Hosking’s seventh century for the Roos, and his third against White Hills, having also made 171 not out in 2007-08 and 123 in 2008-09 against the Demons.Hosking spent 243 minutes at the crease and faced 205 balls during his innings, which started in the sixth over following the dismissal of Josh Newlan (1) with the score on three. He hit 12 boundaries and one six during his knock, which ended in the 79th over when he skied a ball and was superbly caught by Oliver Geary off Brayden Klemke (1-57) to be the sixth wicket to fall with the score on 243.It was the best batting performance of the season for the Roos as seven of their nine batsmen used made double figures.Opener Mitchell Collins (44 off 105, four fours) batted solidly as he put on 84 for the second wicket with Hosking, before he was out in the 36th over to become Thomas Schultz’s (1-7) first wicket in the first XI.Veteran Brad Orton made a quickfire 48 off 41 balls (five fours, one six) late in the innings to help the Roos’ to their highest score since making 5-311 against White Hills on February 27, 2010.White Hills used nine different bowlers, with skipper Gavin Bowles (2-35) the only multiple wicket-taker.● After being bowled out for 176 by Golden Square, Sandhurst hit back brilliantly with the ball late in the day at J.L. King Weeroona Oval.Square had 15 overs to face before stumps and it proved to be a horror period as the Dragons claimed four wickets to regain the momentum heading into day two this Saturday.Square will resume at 4-38, with the batsmen out Scott Johnson (16), Alex Code (13), captain Grant Connelly (4) and Max Grant (0).Johnson and Code safely negotiated the first six overs as they took the score to 29.But the run-out of Johnson by Quinton Bentley in the seventh over sparked a dramatic turnaround as Square lost 4-9 to go stumps on the backfoot. The destroyer with the ball for Sandhurst was Elias Bowe, who claimed the last three wickets to fall to already have figures of 3-6 off four overs.Earlier, first-gamer Isaac Conway, who turned 15 last month, top-scored for the Dragons with 30 off 61 balls.Sandhurst had got off to a solid start with openers Nick Scullie (22 off 57) and Shane Robinson (29 off 74) putting on 50 for the first wicket. However, when Scullie was dismissed by Luke Baird (1-22) in the 20th over, the Dragons soon fell from 0-50 to 4-84 in the 38th over as Robinson, last round century-maker Andrew Bourne (10 off 27) and Dylan Gibson (19 off 62) joined Scullie in the pavilion.Conway started his innings at 4-84 and batted through until the score reached 171 in the 62nd over. The Dragons had been 6-171 before Conway’s dismissal, but when he was removed the tail quickly followed as Sandhurst lost 4-5 to be all out for 176 in the 67th over.● Bendigo United fought back from 4-68 to post 292 against Eaglehawk at Canterbury Park. The Hawks held the upper hand when the Redbacks fell from 1-50 in the 27th over to 4-68 in the 32nd.The Redbacks lost the out-of-touch Mark Di Fede (8 off 10) in the fifth over with the score on 13, before Wayne Fidler and Heath Behrens took the score to 50.But when Behrens – who had earlier been given a life on six – was trapped lbw by Cameron McGlashan (1-22), the Hawks had the Redbacks on the ropes as Fidler (22 off 79) and Harry Donegan (4 off 15) were both out soon after. However, the Redbacks’ middle and lower-order, led by Nick Crawford, showed plenty of resistance as the last six wickets combined to put on 224.Crawford led the way with a crafty 73 off 133 balls before he was run out by Matt White. He had earlier been given a chance when dropped in the outfield on 39.Crawford shared in an 83-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Patrick Naughtin (34 off 50), who started well with four of his first six scoring shots boundaries.Joel Spry (45 off 74), who made a welcome return to the side, Byron Perrin (30 off 29) and Marcus Smalley (18 n.o. off 19) all made their highest first XI scores for the Redbacks. For the second game in a row, Cory Jacobs was the standout bowler for Eaglehawk. After taking 5-32 against Strathfieldsaye last week, Jacobs followed it up by taking 4-85 against the Redbacks.Jacobs sent down 29 overs, including a first spell of 17-straight overs, during which he took 2-35.Paceman Richard Tibbett (2-42) was the other multiple wicket-taker for the Hawks.● Another fine batting performance from captain Hayden Polglase helped Bendigo post 7-239 against Strathfieldsaye at Tannery Lane. The Goers’ innings got off to a poor start when young opener Mitchell Blackman (0) was bowled by Justin Hargreaves (1-3) on the fifth ball of the match. With Blackman gone, Polglase started his innings at 1-3 and he went on to compile his sixth score above 50 for the season.Polglase top-scored with 82 off 207 balls, which included seven boundaries and one six.His knock took his tally of runs for the season to 564 – 415 of which have come in his past seven innings.Polglase’s tally of 564 runs in the most in a season by a Bendigo player since Chris Squibb plundered 782 at an average of 78.2 in the 2002-03 season.Opener Michael Hill also batted well for the Goers, making 50 off 133 balls and putting on 95 for the second wicket with Polglase. It was Hill’s fourth half-century of the season.Veteran Glenn Franzi made 43 off 47 balls (four fours and one six) after coming in with the score at 4-156.In his debut first XI innings, Craig Pearce finished 21 not out off 44 balls.Highlighting the amount of players who the Goers have used, Pearce was the 25th player to bat for Bendigo this season. It was a memorable day for Strathfieldsaye youngster Martin Leyden. With his first ball in first XI cricket, Leyden dismissed John Howorth (15), while he later bowled Polglase to finish with figures of 2-4 off four overs.Another promising youngster in Lachlan Ross (2-36) also took two wickets for the Jets, who had Justin Hargreaves injure his knee after just three overs.Meanwhile, Strathfieldsaye’s Adam Hargreaves has announced he will retire after this season.
