FOLLOWING another brilliant grand final performance over the weekend, it seems there’s nothing Strathdale-Maristians’ all-rounder Ben DeAraugo can’t do on a cricket field.

On Saturday DeAraugo top-scored for the second year in a row in the grand final for the Suns with 72 off 95 balls against Bendigo United.
Then yesterday he produced one of the highlights of the game with his diving one-handed catch at cover to dismiss Redbacks’ opener Mark Di Fede, before he claimed the wickets of Nick Crawford and Wayne Fidler in the 20 minutes after the tea break to put the Suns in the box seat to win the Bendigo District Cricket Association premiership.
With his triple act of 72, superb catch and 2-67 off 23 overs, there were no surprises at yesterday’s presentation when DeAraugo was awarded the Taylor-Walsh Medal for the second year in a row.
It was just another example of why DeAraugo is now the best big-game player in the BDCA, with his weekend heroics coming on the back of a season that by his lofty standards had been far from his best.
But the modest DeAraugo was quick to shift the spotlight away from himself after the game.
“The beauty of our side is the depth we’ve got,” said DeAraugo, who was part of the match-defining partnership on Saturday when he put on 100 for the seventh wicket with Craig Howard that helped the Suns reach a winning 270.
“We’ve got so many blokes who can do a job with the bat and with the ball, so we never feel we’re out of a game.
“That’s one of the joys of playing in this team.”
