The reigning Victorian light welterweight champion won an engrossing duel in Saturday night’s finale to the boxing card at Flora Hill Stadium.
Taggert’s unbeaten run since a bronze medal finish at last year’s national titles now stands at seven after he scored a unaminous points decision against Tasmania’s Jacob Doreen.
“It was a sensational bout,” said Frank Pianto, promoter of the fight night and also Taggert’s trainer.
“It was a great battle from the first bell. Danny had his nose broken in the first round and we had some trouble stemming the bleeding.”
After being given the all-clear to fight on, Taggert gradually lifted his points tally.
“Momentum went Danny’s way, then Jacob’s, and back again,” said Pianto.
“The fans really enjoyed it.
“Jacob is the Australian lightweight champion, so we knew it was always going to be a tough contest.
“It turned out to be an epic battle.”
Earlier in the night, Hugh Trigg from the Pianto team was beaten in a light heavyweight showdown.
Pianto said Taggert would continue to put in plenty of hours training at the backyard gym in North Bendigo to prepare for the Golden Gloves.
“That tournament will be in Queensland from August 31. It’s a three-day tournament and involves 180 bouts across three days.”
Pianto said Saturday night’s event at Flora Hill Stadium, the second run this year, provided plenty of entertainment.
“We had 14 boxing bouts, some kickboxing, mixed martial arts contests, and a Filipino stickfighting demonstration.
“A lot of the boxers were from across Victoria, and we had four Tasmanians on the card.
“The fans were not disappointed, especially with Danny Taggert’s victory.”
