THE Victorian opposition has accused the government of breaking its election commitment to bury the state’s powerlines.Labor Energy spokeswoman Lily D’Ambrosio said the government had “turned its back” on its pledge to implement all 67 recommendations from the Bushfires Royal Commission. The government yesterday committed an additional $200 million to replace the state’s most dangerous powerlines. The state will spend a further $50 million for research and development of new technology and to address supply reliability. The government’s $1 billion plan requires power supply companies to spend about $500 million to upgrade their networks.“Mr O’Brien’s plan... relies on Victorian families to pay for half of the cost through their power bills, which are already set to rise in just two days time,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.“The Energy Minister has been hiding from this issue all year, having delayed the report, blocked its release and now released the government’s response under the cover of New Year’s Eve.”The government has conceded its plan will cost households more in electricity bills. But Mr O’Brien said residents’ bills would only increase $1.30 for an “average household” in the first year. The government estimates bills will rise $2.60 in the second year and peak at $13 in year 11.Forecasts suggest the cost increases would decline after the 11th year of the program.
