PETITION: Ruth Jenkins and Sharon Fullex say Goornong station needs a platform.

GOORNONG residents are pushing for passenger trains to stop in their town again. But first they need a platform.A petition signed by 175 residents calling for the platform will be tabled at tonight's Greater Bendigo City council meeting.Ruth Jenkins said yesterday the major plank of her argument for a platform was that good public transport should be available and accessible to everyone."With the assistance of government we have been able to gain a limited number of bus services to stop in Goornong," she said, "and now we are pushing for more." Mrs Jenkins said with the price of fuel escalating, a regular train service to Echuca and Bendigo was needed for Goornong people working away from the town. Also supporting the push is Sharon Fullex, who said there was ample land at the old station and there were public toilets nearby."There is also plenty of land available for car parking," she said.Mrs Jenkins has a letter from V/Line in 1995 saying it would cost $50,000 for a Goornong rail stop. But recently it said the cost would now be $500,000.The Bendigo-Echuca train passes through Goornong each weekday morning and afternoon. And there are a number of weekend services. All they need is somewhere to stop.
