Scientist hits out at emissions bill

Scientist hits out at emissions bill

24 Jun, 2009 10:38 AM
A LEADING academic says the Carbon Pollution Reduction bill before Parliament is the single worst piece of legislation to be foisted on the Australian public.

Professor Bob Carter was in Bendigo last night to address a climate science meeting.

He said Australians were being conned, as the bill was aimed at carbon dioxide rather than carbon, and carbon dioxide was not a pollutant.

Professor Carter said the public should have access to balanced views on climate change.

Twenty years of intensive research and great expenditure had produced no compelling evidence that humans have had a significant effect on climate.

“I have been described as a sceptic. I am not a sceptic, I am a scientist, and all good scientists should be sceptical.

“I would rather be described as a climate agnostic.’’

Professor Carter is adjunct professorial fellow at the Marine Geophysical Laboratory at James Cook University, Townsville.

He said the legislation would be fine if it meant positive outcomes.

However, it did not, and it was the underprivileged people who would be hit hardest.

“Everywhere else in the world similar legislation is called emission trading bills.’’

He said the use of the term “carbon dioxide’’ to indicate a pollutant was not correct in language, logic or science.

And “climate change’’ was a tautology, as the climate changed continually.

“If the bill is implemented, carbon dioxide emission will be reduced but the cost will be $3000 a head each year in taxes for every Australian.

“And the temperature change will be 0.001C by the year 2100.

“That is the science.’’

I saw Bob speak last night and he is a breath of scientific fresh air in an otherwise politicized debate. Bob raised many relevant points and showed that the global warming of the 20th century was neither dangerous nor unprecedented. If you missed it, I highly recommend catching Bob on one of his speaking engagements. Steve Murphy writing from www.climatesceptics.com.au

Professor Carter is correct. The campaign to demonise carbon has been very effectively run. 1. Use fear - end of the the world scare campaign to attract the media and alarm the public. 2. Politicians now create policy based on polls so they follow the media and public. 3. If anybody disagrees simply say "The Time for Debate is over", even when there was no actual debate. 4. If that fails; say anybody who's not scientist has no right to comment and any scientist that disagrees must be paid by big oil. 4. If that fails; say anybody who disagrees is putting us all at risk and therefore there is something morally wrong with them. The truth will eventually prevail though. Unfortunately it will not happen before we have exported a large number of our industries. Spectical and Proud to be so

Carbon dioxide was only blamed for warming when the output of climate models could not replicate historical temperatures. Rather than admit that the models were incomplete (as the IPCC acknowledges) the climate modellers decided to plug the gap with some work done almost 100 years ago. Never mind that the known physics of carbon dioxide couldn't account for the warming, that could all be hidden by "positive feedbacks" (i.e. factors to exaggerate the warming). Was any other climate factor tested? no. Did the modellers correct the problems with natural climate forces? No, they couldn't because the knowledge still isn't available. The proposed CPRS has no basis in science and is just a political tool - it's that simple.

Notice that Kevin who told us that we were all doomed if we did not act NOW, then once the Financial Crisis hit, we could all wait at least another 12 months.

Whilst no doubt Bob Carter is a respected and intelligent scientist, global warming is real and is happening. The evidence is compelling that human activity over the last 100 years has led to a warming of the atmosphere due to increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Melting glaciers, rising temperatures and sea levels and longer droughts are all evidence of Global Warming. Bendigo has yet to reach our monthly rainfall all year and we are in the midst of a 12 year drought with no signs of letting up. These arn't normal climatic patterns that occur in such a short period of time, rather they are the beginnings of a global climatic catastrophe. Far fetched? A little, but this really is happening and we need to take action now to avert serious consequences.

For the sake of our children, Australia must no longer demonise carbon - the sixth essential element of life. Let's be proud of our fantastic Victoria brown coal that has brought Bendigo and other cities investment, jobs and untold prosperity in the last sixty years. The State Electricity Commission may no longer (for all practical purposes) exist and nor do its trams except as a much loved Bendigonian tourist attraction, but in its day SECV executives always defended 'lignite' (brown coal). In fact, they sttod tall and promoted it! Good on Professor Carter for speaking the truth, It is fantastic that despite almost all Federal politicians being afraid to join him, that more Australians are realising how left-wing extremists who hate free enterrpise have conned millions into believing falsehoods. I love switching on lights (provided that it is for a legitimate use and not wasteful) because it's a daily reminder that we have something, thanks largely to brown coal, that so many less affluent people in the developing world lack - relatively cheap, abundant electricity.

Yes Chris we all agree the climate is changing as it has been for thousand's of year's, not because of human intervention but because of natural occuring phenomenon ie that great fire in the sky, comonly known as the SUN.Instead of believing all the propaganda being circulated by the press on behalf of Rudd,Wong and Garrett go to the climate sceptic sight www.climatesceptics.com.au and read the other side of the debate. As for the propasal to introduce a Carbon Trading Scheme that is just going be an excuse for another TAX,that will in the long term probably wipe out most of the Australian agricultural industry.

Chris (3:07pm), you seem very gullible and unable to perceive that warming might exist without any human influence. Scientists are still trying to decide what drives Australia's rainfall so to blame human activity before the driver is known is utter foolishness. If there's any single factor that seems to have greatlyy influenced climate patterns it's the Great Pacific Climate Shift of early 1976 that has swung the bias away from a slight bias towards la Nina to a much stronger bias towards El Nino. In other words it was a step, not a steady change.

It’s so easy to persuade people by telling them exactly what they want to hear, but the facts are unfortunately much more “inconvenient” than that. Bob Carter is a geologist who has very little background in Climate Science research (but clear links to the fossil fuel energy sector) yet he claims that the conclusion reached by the many hundreds of genuine researchers in the field of Climate Science are wrong. Where is the peer reviewed research from Bob Carter showing that climate change is not happening? The simple answer is that it doesn't exist. His very precise assertion that “the temperature change will be 0.001C by the year 2100” is simply preposterous. I wonder who sponsored his recent visit to the right wing ‘Heartland’ climate change deniers conference in the US? It’s very disappointing when the likes of Senator Fielding, pursuaded by such nonsense, end up with a deciding vote which can derail progress on climate change in Australia. Fortunately the Obama administration is making good progress on the issue in the US.

Taxing CO2 is in essence taxing life itself. CO2 is a harmless yet essential to life gas and the effect on atmospheric thermal energy of the increase or decrease of CO2 is automatically compensated for by shifts in the levels of other so-called green-house gases, mostly water. This has been demonstrated by the work of Ferenc Miskolczi, a former NASA scientist. Ultimately, climatic temperatures are set by solar activity, mostly the magnetic activity which influences bomardment levels of cosmic rays on the earth and thereby directly affects low-altitude cloud formation by changing densities of available cloud-seeding particles, resulting in changes in the earth's albedo, the amount of sunlight that is directly reflected mostly by low cloud, and therefore alters the energy reaching the ground resulting in changes in heating of the earth's surface (see the work of Henrik Svensmark of the Danish Space Research Institute). This, combined with volcanic activity and to a small extent the effects of deforestation is what influences the climate. NOT CO2!!! Paying tribute for CO2 is equivalent to signing away your own right to live and breathe!!! Don't do it - it's a con!!!
