BENDIGO pigeon racing, shows and exhibitions have been put on hold for two weeks after a fatal virus, not previously in Australia, was detected in Victoria.A paramyxovirus was found in hobby pigeons near Shepparton and is the likely cause of pigeon deaths in the north-western suburbs of Melbourne. The Department of Primary Industries has advised all pigeon owners to implement strong biosecurity measures, such as preventing contact with all other pigeons, both directly and indirectly, to minimise the risk of spreading the disease.Affected pigeon flocks have experienced high mortality rates after showing lethargy, gastrointestinal and neurological signs. The department has urged owners who notice any similar signs to confine birds to their premises and contact either a veterinarian or the DPI on 1800 675 888.Bendigo City Homing Club president Ron Whitford said all pigeon owners have been advised to stop racing and training, or any activity where flocks come into contact with each other, for the next two weeks.“We’re not going to race until further notified,’’ he said. “It’s all about trying to avoid contact with other birds. The disease is not in racing pigeons at this point, but we’re voluntarily quarantining our birds and working with the DPI.’’Victoria’s deputy chief veterinary officer Andrew Cameron said paramyxoviruses strains were capable of infecting poultry and producers should reinforce biosecurity measures to ensure the industry’s standard was in place.Dr Cameron said there wasn’t a registered vaccine for pigeons but the department was exploring options.
