EVERY now and then someone comes along who goes above and beyond the call of duty.South Marong’s Ken Forbes is one of those people.Yesterday he was recognised for attending 21 Muscular Dystrophy Association camps. But for Mr Forbes and his wife Marg, volunteering at the camps has brought him more comfort and joy than he expected.“I’ve been involved with muscular dystrophy in some way my whole life,” he said.In 2002 the couple’s youngest son passed away.He was 15 and had MD.Then, in 2004, Mr Forbes began working as an integration aid at Craigieburn Secondary College, and it was there that he met MD sufferer Dominic Di Battista. Some six years later, he has seen Dominic finish year 12 and begin tertiary studies.“My son loved the camps, so I thought I’d just go along and give something back,” he said.“But it turns out I’ve gotten more out of the camp than I ever thought.“The kids are great and keep me young.“It’s the whole atmosphere.“Marg has done seven camps.“The camps have helped us - it’s kept us connected.“I couldn’t do it without my wife, though.“She is the one who supports me.”The camp at Derby Hill in Maldon has hosted more than 40 children affected by MD since Tuesday and winds up today. The camp is a long-running initiative of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. It provides respite to families and carers and allows the children to have fun in a safe environment.MD is a muscle-destroying disorder that affects one in every 1000 Australians. Duchenne MD specifically affects young boys, who are confined to wheelchairs and have a drastically shortened life expectancy. There is no cure.
