AN Echuca man was trapped inside his vehicle for almost an hour on Saturday night. The man, believed to be in his 30s, was driving south along the Midland Highway when his car veered off the road and slammed into a tree near the Murchison turn-off shortly after midnight.Sergeant Brad Towers said police received reports earlier in the night that suggested the man was driving while under the influence of drugs. He said police first came across the man in Rochester, but were unable to intercept him.A short time later police again spotted the man driving erratically along the Midland Highway heading towards Bendigo.Sergeant Towers said the vehicle veered onto the wrong side of the road and clipped a car travelling in the opposite direction.“He has then continued off the road and hit a tree,” Sergeant Towers said.Police said the car was crushed and the man was trapped inside the vehicle for about 40 minutes. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to Bendigo Hospital by road ambulance. The occupants of the other car were not injured.Police have not yet spoken to the man, who yesterday remained in hospital, but hope to do so in the coming days. They’ve asked anyone who may have seen the man’s green Magna sedan on the road on Saturday night to contact them.Anyone with information can contact Sergeant Towers at Bendigo police station on 5448 1300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
