NEXT month’s royal visit and the Grace Kelly: Style Icon exhibition launch have drawn unprecedented interest. The exhibition opening has reached “fever pitch” and is already booked out, says the Bendigo Art Gallery.“It’s been an extraordinary day,” a spokesperson from the gallery said late yesterday. “Invitations for members were sent yesterday and the opening booked out today within three hours. “This is unprecedented. “The phones were ringing solidly all day.”New royal Princess Charlene of Monaco will visit Bendigo next month to officially open Grace Kelly: Style Icon at Bendigo Art Gallery. The Bendigo stop is the final destination for the exhibition’s world tour. It features more than 100 pieces such as film costumes, tailored suits, casual wear, jewellery, accessories and gowns, including her wedding dress and the outfit she wore to collect her Academy Award. News of the exhibition opening’s popularity came as Mattel released its newest Barbie – the Rear Window Grace Kelly Doll. The Grace Kelly doll pays tribute to the actress and princess and captures her in one of her best moments. The Grace Kelly doll wears a stunning black and white dress inspired by the frock Grace Kelly wore in the 1954 film Rear Window.“I think it is extraordinary that Mattel have produced this unique Barbie,” Bendigo Art Gallery director Karen Quinlan said.“It confirms that Grace Kelly is certainly an icon for many of us. “As a child I played with Barbie dolls.“I guess this was in part because l liked clothing and so played with them for hours over many years.”The Grace Kelly: Style Icon exhibition will be showing at the Bendigo Art Gallery from March 11 to June 17.
