CONCERN: Kymberlie Dimozantos looks towards a clean, green future.

BENDIGO woman Kymberlie Dimozantos has been chosen as the Australian Greens candidate for the federal seat of Bendigo in the election later this year.Ms Dimozantos will take on Liberal candidate Craig Hunter and Member for Bendigo Steve Gibbons. Her campaign will be launched on Saturday by Greens leader Bob Brown.Ms Dimozantos, 26, was born in Castlemaine and works and lives in Bendigo. “I feel a responsibility to do my best to provide a safe future for the generations to come,” she said.“I think it’s really important to look ahead towards a clean, safe future.”Ms Dimozantos said voters had been let down by the federal government’s backdown on the emissions trading scheme, and it was proved in the polls at the time.“We’re now in July and people still want a solution, and we are the only party that has a policy.“My concern extends to everyone living in this region.“We all deserve a future that has fresh air, clean water, a quality health system that is accessible to all, and an education system that is based on merit and opportunity, not affordability.”Ms Dimozantos said she was delighted to have Mr Brown launching her campaign because it showed how committed the Greens were to rural and regional Victoria.Toby Byrne stood for the Australian Greens in the 2007 election and marginally increased the party’s standing in Bendigo — from 6.9 per cent to about 7.2 per cent.Mr Gibbons has held the seat for the Labor Party since 1998, when he won it after Liberal Bruce Reid retired. He retained what was then Victoria’s most marginal federal seat in 2007 with a swing of 5 per cent over the then Liberal candidate and now Bendigo Advertiser editor Peter Kennedy. It was part of the national swing that resulted in Kevin Rudd becoming prime minister.
