Council hands out $222,049 in community grants

Environmental, community, cultural, music and recreational groups are among 113 to receive City of Greater Bendigo community grants.Bendigo mayor Rod Fyffe said $222,049 would be delivered to a diverse range of local community groups in this latest round of funding.''Grants are provided in five categories: environmental sustainability, cultural, community assistance, community events and recreation,'' he said.''The aim of the community grants program is to assist local community groups and organisations from throughout the municipality with the costs associated with providing activities, events, projects, works and initiatives. ''The grants will benefit a wonderful range of projects that have been initiated by the community for the community and we are very pleased to be able to assist.''In this round we have provided $42,500 towards cultural projects, $18,049 for environmental projects, $34,000 for community events, $76,500 for general community assistance and $51,000 for recreation projects. By providing this funding direct to the community groups through the grants program we empower local people to make a difference in their community.''Some of the groups to receive funding in the recent round include:Environmental Sustainability Category$4974 to Discovery Science and Technology Centre for a new Sustainable House exhibit.$4725 to Sheepwash Creek Land care Group toward the Chateau Dore Riparian Restoration Project.$900 for tree planting at Axedale Recreation ReserveCommunity Events Category.$2825 to Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival.$5000 to Jaara Jaara Loddon Aboriginal Inc Bunjil Festival.$1000 to assist with the running of the Bendigo Queer Film Festival.$2000 to New Horizons Welfare Services for a Community Christmas Celebration at Dr Catford Park Eaglehawk.Cultural Category$2000 to Bendigo Chamber Choir’s 2012 Concert Series.$1000 to German Friendship Society and Heritage Society to catalogue heritage documents.$1500 to Bendigo Historical Society for Bendigo Rail – A History project.$2000 to Eaglehawk Community House for the staging of a Cultural and Community Festival.$2000 to 10th annual Bendigo Dance EisteddfodCommunity Assistance Category.$2000 to Strathdale Senior Citizens Club to update clubrooms blinds and curtains.$3500 Long Gully Neighbourhood Centre’s new youth space project and young drivers.$3000 toward Lockwood Fire Station extension.$2000 to Lifeline Central Victoria for Suicide Awareness Week.$3000 to Phoenix FM for enable outside broadcasting programs to strengthen community connections.Recreation Category$5000 to install cricket pitch at Kangaroo Flat Primary School.$3300 to upgrade play equipment in Heathcote Lions Park.$5000 for new storage facility at Bendigo Branch of Field and Game Australia.$3000 for construction of golf nets at Axedale Golf ClubA full list of grant recipients will be published in tomorrow's Bendigo Advertiser.
