BENDIGO Day Surgery staff were forced indoors yesterday after a chemical spill in the centre car park.Pedestrian traffic was blocked from both sides of the building for more than two hours as CFA crews, including one officer in a Hazmat suit, identified and cleared the liquid.Day surgery office manager Terri Billett said the chemical was believed to be a herbicide that leaked from the back of a patient’s ute in the car park. She said it was discovered by a staff member from Melbourne Pathology, who shares the building.Ms Billett said patients were advised to stay away from the building, although there had been no threat to safety.“Everyone’s fine, we’re in no danger,” she said.Bendigo Fire Brigade senior station officer Craig Houlahan said the chemical, Amicide, was potentially dangerous if touched, inhaled or ingested.“We were able to isolate the leak and gain entry into the hospital’s stormwater system,” he said.“We organised with the EPA (Environmental Protection Authority) to pump it out.”He said it took anout two-and-a-half hours to clear the scene.
