THE Bendigo Scooter Club is not what you would expect a group of motorcycle enthusiasts to be.In fact, the diverse group prides itself on being open to people of all ages and gender, and with any model bike.Club co-founder Marilyn McKnight said it all began with an expression of interest in the newspaper three years ago, calling for local riders to meet.“It just grew from there,” she said.“It’s becoming more and more popular now, we’re even looking to team up with the local Vespa appreciation club.”The 30-strong group meet Sunday mornings for a scenic ride through regional towns followed by a coffee and chat.Veteran rider Graham Lowe, 80, was one of the first members to join after responding to Ms McKnight’s notice.“A mate of mine rang up to tell me someone was advertising a club,” he said. “I’ve been riding bikes for a long time, but I really enjoy the companionship as well as our trips away.”Ms McKnight said it was not just about the social side of things but motor safety too.“There are a number of new riders among us,” she said.“We take them out in the group and it’s a better way for them to learn.”The club recently celebrated three years together with a 10-day journey around Tasmania in March.“It was a magnificent ride,” Mr Lowe said.Ms McKnight hoped the trip would become a regular event for the club.“We had around 12 people who caught the ferry over and circled around Tasmania,” she said.“We would love to do it again and next time go for even longer.“Right now we’re looking forward to our next ride to Mount Beauty next Sunday.”The Bendigo Scooter Club meets each Sunday at 10am at the Strath Village car park.Phone 5444 5695 or 5444 5836 for more information.
