FOR less than $10,000, clean renewable energy can be blown into a dwelling and provide about half its power needs.Private wind power is the dream of Anthony Interlandi, director and chief executive of Altaus, a company that designs and builds wind turbines for residential use.Altaus has gained a grant of $64,000 from the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, under the Commercialising Emerging Technologies scheme.“We design and manufacture wind turbines for inner suburban areas - the urban turbine,” Mr Interlandi said. The grant would help move turbines from the factory into suburban houses.“We had been self-funded, so getting the government grant was like 'wow!'”Federal member for Bendigo Steve Gibbons said Altaus was a deserving recipient of the grant.“It is sensational, it is like nothing I’ve ever seen. The design allows it to still generate power at low wind velocity.”Altaus has big goals, and testing has shown its turbines are much better than others.Mr Interlandi says the turbine is silent and friendly to wildlife. The 1kW turbines are designed to fit in a back yard and need only a square metre for a small tower, which rises above the roof line. Most houses use 1-3kW per hour. The turbines cost $7500, and installation is between $1000 and $2000.
