THE ambulance union has welcomed the Auditor-General’s investigation into Ambulance Victoria with the hope that it lifts staff morale. The Auditor-General will investigate the performance of Ambulance Victoria, with a strong focus on rural and regional ambulance services.Ambulance Employees Australia state secretary Steve McGhie said the probe was a good thing, but it should have happened a long time ago.Mr McGhie said he hoped the investigation would look at cultural issues within the organisation, the budgeting of ambulances, allocation resources and low morale.‘‘We raised our concerns some time ago,’’ he said.‘‘There’s a fair bit of bullying and harassment within the organisation.‘‘We hope that Ambulance Victoria and the government take on board the recom-mendations.‘‘I think it’s unfortunate for the government that it’s coming before an election, but it’s a good thing for the community.’’Premier John Brumby said the Auditor-General routinely looked at how the government spent money on health, education, transport and ambulances.‘‘The Auditor-General looks to see how much money has gone into it and how useful that expenditure has been,’’ Mr Brumby said. ‘‘That’s a matter for the Auditor-General and he’ll table that when he’s completed it.‘‘What I know is that we’ve more than doubled the number of ambulance officers in country Victoria.‘‘Does that mean that any system will always be perfect?‘‘No system is ever perfect, particularly emergency management systems when you can sometimes have unprecedented demand.‘‘We’ve got a strong record of investment.’’
