A KYNETON man, who stabbed his neighbour’s boyfriend while high on a cocktail of prescription drugs and alcohol, has been sentenced to four years in jail.Charles Andrew Papworth, 24, used a kitchen knife to deliberately stab the victim. He was sentenced by Supreme Court Justice Robert Osborn in Bendigo yesterday.“The use of knives for the purpose of assault is simply unacceptable to our society,’’ Justice Osborn said.“Knives are lethal weapons, you are lucky not to have killed your victim.’’Papworth had been drinking and listening to music with his neighbour, the victim and another man prior to the stabbing on April 26 last year. The court was told that over the course of the night Papworth had hit on the victim’s girlfriend and that a verbal confrontation occurred, before Papworth was taken home.Later in the evening Papworth re-emerged from his house and, using a kitchen knife, forcefully stabbed the victim. The victim was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he underwent surgery and treatment for his injuries.Papworth pleaded guilty to one count of intentionally causing serious injury and one count of possessing cannabis. Papworth will serve a minimum two years in jail before he is eligible for parole. He was also fined $100 for possessing a small amount of cannabis.
