Australian Medical Association Victorian president Roderick McRae confirmed this week was when he expected the announcement.

He says the association is working with the state government to establish a sensible timeline and approach to the distribution of vaccines.

"It's an important investment by the Victorian government into the health and welfare of all Victorians," Dr McRae told AAP on Monday.

"It's a safe vaccine ... (and) I would encourage everybody to have it."

Dr McRae said while it was important Victorians received the flu vaccination, they should not all rush out to get it immediately because authorities would need to ensure an orderly booking system.

"It's very important that Victorians understand the public hospital system is under extreme (pressure)," he said.

The medical association president said a lot of people had already been hospitalised in the state with influenza, including young children, with some put into intensive care.

The Victorian government is yet to confirm when it will announce the flu vaccination regime. However, Premier Daniel Andrews said on Sunday authorities would have more to say about the vaccinations soon.

"Announcements about vaccines are very easy and I think some in federal politics learnt that the hard way," he said.

"You've got to have a plan that sits behind it. You've got to have consultation, detailed discussions with the (Australian Medical Association), the Royal (Australian) College of (General Practitioners), and of course, the Pharmacy Guild to make sure that you've got all that work done to be able to deliver what you pay for, or deliver what you offer.

"So we we are in active discussions with those groups and more."

The Victorian government's announcement will follow Queensland, Western Australia and South Australian authorities, who are offering free flu vaccinations to people in those states.
