FOR West Bendigo's Daniel Whiting, some extra work over the Christmas-New Year period to bowl a more consistent fuller length paid dividends last Saturday.

Whiting's stellar figures of 6-32 in the Redbacks' win over Sedgwick in the Emu Valley Cricket Association included a hat-trick on a memorable day with the ball.
All three of Whiting's hat-trick wickets were unassisted as he dismissed Dustin Elliott (lbw), Julian Oxlade (bowled) and Hunter Austin (bowled) all in consecutive deliveries as the Rams crashed from 4-26 to 7-26 at Club Court.
"I had been struggling in the first half of the season to find my range in terms of attacking the stumps... I was bowling a bit too short," Whiting said this week.
"I put in a bit of work over Christmas to get my length a bit fuller and attack the stumps more and that came through a bit in this game.
"That game more than doubled my wicket-count for the season, so it was a good day.
"Bowling first-change, I thought our openers did really well to restrict the runs and take four wickets and then set it up where I was able to keep the pressure on.
"I wouldn't have been able to do what I did without Matt Gallagher or Matt Floyd opening the way they did."
Since the 2006-07 season Whiting's figures last Saturday rank as the fourth best for West Bendigo behind only Tarran Kilcullen (7-47), Zac Makeham (7-97) and Josh Eastley (6-23).
As well as Whiting's hat-trick wickets all being unassisted, so too were his other three scalps as he finished the day with five bowled and one lbw.
The Redbacks won by 13 runs to improve to 4-5 and are now just 0.37 points outside the top four heading into Saturday's tough assignment at home against Spring Gully as they continue to hunt their first finals berth since 2014.
