EAGLEHAWK won a last-ball thriller against Kangaroo Flat by the barest of margins to notch its first victory of the Bendigo District Cricket Association Twenty20 competition on Tuesday night.
The Hawks' score of 7-138 proved just enough as the Roos fell agosingly short on 9-137, with skipper Brent Hamblin run out on the final ball trying for the tieing run.
The Roos needed three off the last ball to win or two to tie, with Hamblin on strike to Aaron Monro (1-41) at Canterbury Park.
Hamblin hit the ball to mid-on where it was fielded by Ben Williams, who threw the ball in to wicket-keeper Brendan Archbold, who ran out Hamblin (5) coming back for a second run.
It was a gritty fightback for the Hawks given the Roos had been in the box seat at 3-117 in the 16th over.
However, the big wicket of Jake Klemm shifted the momentum the Hawks' way.
Klemm had been in blistering form, but when he fell for 70 off just 39 balls after being caught by Josh Williams at deep cover off Jordan Shelton (1-21), it opened the door for the Hawks.
And the Hawks capitalised as a string of wickets fell late for the Roos, who lost 5-20 over the last four overs, with three of those wickets tumbling in the final over of the innings.
"Jordan Shelton getting Klemmy out was a big wicket, Rhys Smith bowled a couple of tight overs late and we were able to tighten the screws," Eaglehawk captain Nick Farley said.
Farley (2-24) and Rhys Smith (2-23) each took two wickets for the Hawks in what was a must-win game after they had lost their opening match of the competition against Strathfieldsaye last month.
Earlier, Eaglehawk's tally of 7-138 after it won the toss was headed by Josh Williams' knock of 46.
Coming in with the score at 2-46, Williams' 46 came off 42 balls and featured three boundaries and one six.
Williams started his innings following an entertaining 13-ball knock from opener Russell Stockdale, who cracked three sixes in his 27.
As well as starring with the bat for the Roos with his hard-hitting 70 that lifted him past 500 career Twenty20 runs, Klemm was also the Roos' best with the ball with 3-14 from his four overs.
And an encouraging sign for the Roos moving forward was Dylan Klemm (1-18) again being part of the bowling line-up.
The result leaves both the Hawks and Roos with 1-1 records in Pool 1.
Meanwhile, Strathfieldsaye's Xavier Crone was part of the Carlton team that defeated St Kilda in Tuesday night's Victorian Super Slam grand final.
The Blues (8-143) beat the Saints (6-132) by 11 runs at the Albert Ground.
Bowling first-change, Victorian squad member Crone snared 1-23 off four overs, picking up the key wicket of St Kilda's Adam Crosthwaite (12).
He also made two off three balls with the bat.
