Geary had skippered the Saints since 2017 after taking over from the club's longest-serving captain, Nick Riewoldt.
The 33-year-old Eaglehawk junior and Bendigo Pioneers' best and fairest in 2006 endured a frustrating run of injuries throughout his stint as captain, playing 66 of a possible 107 games while skipper.
"I've done it for the past five years; it's something I've loved doing and something I'm really proud of," Geary told the St Kilda playing group this week.
"I'm privileged to have led this club for the past five years and the thing I have really loved about it is knowing you guys have all supported me and put me in this position and wanted me to lead you week in, week out, albeit over the past couple of years I haven't had the chance to do it too often.
"Knowing I've had your support throughout each week is something I've cherished.
"I'm not standing aside because I've had enough of doing the job, I just think it's the right time to step aside.
"I think we've got some great leaders to take this club forward and I think it's the best for the club and myself to do this."
Geary has been at St Kilda since his selection by the Saints with pick No.58 in the 2007 rookie draft.
The defender has played 207 games for St Kilda, but just 24 over the past three years through a combination of a nasty quad injury, two broken legs and a shoulder injury.
