Ms Boynton is also chair of Lifeline Central Victoria and Mallee and vice-chair of the Bendigo Jockey Club.
M. Boynton takes on the position at a critical time in the gallery's history, as it finalises plans for a major new expansion project due to begin in 2023.
"I am excited to take on this new role and to work with the City of Greater Bendigo, director Jessica Bridgfoot and the extremely talented team to achieve the next big new step in the gallery's long and celebrated history," Ms Boynton said.
"I am cognisant of the incredible social and economic importance of the gallery in the region, and the critical role it plays in creating opportunities for the tourism and business sectors, as well as the reputation it holds nationally as one of the most successful regional galleries in Australia."
Outgoing chair Garry Quinn said he was pleased to hand over the reins to Ms Boynton.
"The gallery faces a very exciting period of growth and Jan has the business acumen and passion to support the gallery team as it begins this ambitious and exciting new chapter," Mr Quinn said.
