The show has been more than years in the making after it was announced in late 2019.
Performer Jakoby Appleby, who plays the wise and respected leader Old Deuteronomy, said it was thrilling to be so close to opening.
"I can't wait. We have been waiting so long to perform the show and going to be fun to show friends and family," he said.
"Old Deuteronomy is the leader of the cats, everyone respects him and wants his appreciation. To play a big role like that is a bit nerve-wracking, especially with some of the higher notes he has that aren't particularly in my register."
After the show was postponed due to the pandemic, cast members have taken part in a two-week intensive rehearsal period in January to prepare for Sunday's opening performance.
"The intensives are exciting," Jakoby said. "I feel confident in what we can and are able to do. It's helping us get ready and realise the show is coming up. It's real and we can get there.
"I feel like I have changed along with the show. It's gone through so many iterations but I'm glad we stuck with it to show off the talents of these Cats performers.
"It's been a really fun experience and is something to give your time to (during the pandemic)."
Tribe Youth Theatre's production of Cats opens on Sunday. It is on at Girton Grammar's Black Box Theatre at 7pm on January 16, 17, 19, 20, 21 and 22, and at 1pm on January 16 and 22. For tickets visit www.gotix.com.au
