Heathcote CFA captain Carl Watkins confirmed the bushfire began after being struck by lightning Monday night but took off only a few hours ago.
The fire was bought under control at about 5pm.
An eyewitness confirmed the blaze occurred on farmland - through fairly hilly terrain.
Captain Watkins said the bushfire came close but didn't threaten any homes or people.
CFA crews are on scene blacking out, five more crews are en route to assist.
Two helitac water bombers were assisting ground crews from the air, and remain on scene.

Captain Watkins said CFA will remain on scene throughout the night to keep blacking out and keeping an eye on it.
He also said the fire covered an area of 37 hectares, but because of the hilly terrain it was likely more than that.
4.45pm
Thirteen CFA vehicles are currently on scene - with more en route - battling to bring the Glenhope bushfire under control almost two hours after it was first reported.
A CFA spokesperson has confirmed the bushfire appeared to have been started by lightning.

"On arrival, crews found a grass and scrub fire," they said.
"Crews have contained the fire to approximately 75 hectares, and are expecting to declare it under control shortly."
An advice message has been issued to the community for smoke in the area.
"Forest Fire Management Victoria is also providing support," the CFA spokesperson said.
4.30pm
A community notice has been issued in response to the fire and the amount of smoke in the area.
The notice said smoke may be visible from nearby roads and communities, and firefighters are on scene but there was no immediate threat to the community and no action is required.
3.30pm
A fire is burning on Randall's lane in Glenhope, 25kms north east of Kyneton.
CFA were notified at 2.50pm.
Multiple tankers are responding to the blaze.
The intial report was of a tree fire spreading.
At this point the Bendigo Advertiser is unsure how the fire began.
The blaze is not yet under control.
