A LOOK back at the standout performances with the bat and ball across the Bendigo District and Emu Valley cricket associations for the 2021 calendar year.
BATTING:
173 - Tyrone Downie
Emu Creek v Axe Creek
March 6
Gun Emu Creek all-rounder Downie takes out the No.1 position as 2021's top innings with the bat in either a BDCA first XI or EVCA division one match.
Downie torched the Axe Creek bowling line-up with a whirlwind 173 opening the batting in the Emus' mammoth 7-326 off their 40 overs batting first on March 6.
Downie faced just 100 balls and scored 124 runs through a combination of fours (19) and sixes (eight) in his onslaught at Longlea.
Downie on his own beat Axe Creek by 59 runs, with the Cowboys all out for just 114 in reply.
140 - Linton Colclough
Mandurang v Sedgwick
November 20
The Mandurang opener was in scintillating touch on November 20 with a brutal knock of 140 against Sedgwick at Club Court.
Colclough faced just 82 balls and of his 140 runs he only had to run 28 after smashing 10 boundaries and 12 sixes during his 136-minute stay at the crease that helped propel the Rangas to 7-280 from their 40 overs.
In reply the Rams as a team were unable to match Colcough's dominant knock, with Sedgwick restricted to 7-138 in its chase.
133* - Alex Code
United v California Gully
November 27
Chasing California Gully's 9-137 the Tigers were in a spot of early bother at 2-12 when No.4 Code strode to the California Gully pitch.
Just over two hours later Code was still at the crease unbeaten on 133 and the Tigers comfortable winners at 5-250.
Code's 133 n.o. came off 121 balls and was laced with 18 boundaries and two sixes.
125 - Bodee Scullie
West Bendigo v Sedgwick
November 13
Following a delayed start to the 2021-22 EVCA season because of COVID community sport restrictions, Scullie came out with his bat blazing against Sedgwick in the opening round.
Opening the batting Scullie crunched 125 off just 87 balls with 19 boundaries and four sixes, and in doing so outscored the entire Sedgwick team, which had earlier been bundled out for just 103.
It was one of two 2021 centuries for Scullie, who earlier in the year on February 27 made an unbeaten 104 against United.
122* - Jesse Marciano
Spring Gully v Axe Creek
March 13
It was certainly a memorable year with the bat for the Crows' Marciano, who plundered three division one centuries in 2021.
His highest score was his unbeaten 122 against Axe Creek on March 13 when he came in at 1-24 and helped the Crows to 4-283 with an innings that featured 12 boundaries and five sixes on what was a long afternoon for the Cowboys as Spring Gully star Rhys Web also cracked a century.
119 - Nayana Fernando
Strathfieldsaye v Bendigo
January 9
The BDCA's highest score of 2021 was compiled by Jets' opener Fernando on the first day of competition for the year.
Fernando hit off 2021 with a knock of 119 (12 fours, three sixes) against Bendigo at Atkins Street in an innings that included a 182-run partnership for the second wicket with Callum McCarty (66).
"Cal rotated the strike well and once Nayana got to about 40 he was then in a real hurry," Jets' captain Ben Devanny said.
115 - Rhys Webb
Spring Gully v Axe Creek
March 13
This 115 from Webb came in the same innings as the already-mentioned 122 n.o. plundered by Marciano in Spring Gully's March 13 win over Axe Creek.
Webb scored at a strike rate of 149.3 with his 115 taking just 77 balls and 80 runs coming through fours (11) and sixes (six).
Together, Webb and Marciano put on 212 for the third wicket as they took the score from 2-52 to 264 with plenty of lusty hitting between them as they combined for 23 boundaries and 11 sixes.
113 - Anthony McMahon
Sandhurst v Bendigo United
January 16
All-rounder McMahon made the most of his opportunity to step up and open the Sandhurst batting against Bendigo United at Harry Trott Oval.
McMahon's 113 off 108 balls with 10 boundaries and two sixes was the backbone of the Dragons' 8-260, which proved well beyond the reach of the Redbacks (136).
"It was a really good innings from Tony... it's the first time he has opened and for him to get a hundred was awesome," Sandhurst captain Joel Murphy said.
McMahon wasn't far off carrying his bat, lasting into over 43 of the 45 the Dragons' faced.
110 - Danushka Wijemanna
Huntly-North Epsom v White Hills
February 6
The epitome of an all-rounder - he can bat, bowl and wicket-keep - Wijemanna's class was to the fore with his century for the Power opening the innings against the Demons.
Wijemanna took just 91 balls in compiling his 110 in which he sent 11 balls to the Strauch Reserve boundary and one over the rope for six.
Such was his dominance of the Power innings, the score was just 154 when he was the fourth wicket to fall en route to the Power's 34-run victory.

BOWLING:
6-11 - James Smith
United v California Gully
February 20
United's Smith delivered 2021's best bowling performance in a BDCA first XI or EVCA division one match with a devastating spell in a win over California Gully on February 20.
The fourth bowler used, Smith cut a swathe through the Cobras with 6-11 off eight overs as California Gully was routed for just 76.
Smith's six-for was split between three bowled and three caught and included the wickets of Brad Olson, Jordan Knight and Jordan Hynes, who were all dismissed for ducks.
Smith's eight overs included four maidens.
6-15 - Brett Russell
Emu Creek v West Bendigo
November 27
Russell proved the destroyer with the ball as the reigning premier Emus successfully defended their 6-244 against West Bendigo.
Russell sent down 6.4 overs and was rewarded with an outstanding 6-15.
He took six of the last seven wickets to fall as the Redbacks crashed from 1-118 to all out 208, with his scalps featuring four caught and two bowled.
6-23 - Josh Eastley
West Bendigo v California Gully
March 6
A haul of 6-23 capped a fine all-round game by Eastley in the Redbacks' March 6 win over California Gully.
After making 50 with the bat Eastley then ripped through the Cobras with the ball.
Eastley took four of the first five wickets to fall, which included the two big scalps of Cobras' captain Marcus McKern (1) and Brodie McRae (0).
The Cobras were at one stage reeling at 4-4 before being routed in the 20th over for just 69.
As good as gun all-rounder Eastley's figures were off his eight overs, his 6-23 could have been even better had he not conceded 12 wides.
6-26 - Brett Elvey
Huntly-North Epsom v Eaglehawk
January 16
Huntly-North Epsom stalwart Elvey delivered the BDCA's best bowling figures of 2021 in the Power's January 16 win over Eaglehawk at Canterbury Park.
Renowned as one of the most economical bowlers in the competition, Elvey jagged 6-26 off 7.5 overs in what became a thrilling contest where the Power scraped over the line by two wickets.
The sixth bowler used, the wily Elvey's six wickets were five catches and one stumping by wicket-keeper Danushka Wijemanna.
Elvey took the last six wickets of the innings, igniting a Hawks' collapse from 4-103 to all out 131.
6-29 - Darcy Hunter
Strathfieldsaye v White Hills
November 13
The teenage leg-spinner bagged his career best figures on the opening day of the 2021-22 BDCA season as he played a starring role in the Jets' win over White Hills at Scott Street.
Hunter picked up 6-29 from his nine overs to bundle the Demons out for just 88.
"Darcy bowled really well and from ball one he landed them," Jets' captain Ben Devanny said.
"He has been working really hard on his bowling at training and it was a massive reward for effort for him to get a six-wicket bag."
5-9 - Luke Bennett
Emu Creek v Sedgwick
February 27
The Emus' Bennett inflicted a horror day with the bat for Sedgwick at Club Court.
The Rams could muster just 48 in reply to the Emus' 8-160 as opening bowler Bennett led the carnage with 5-9 off eight overs, which included three maidens.
Bennett claimed four of the first five wickets to fall, starting with the dismissals of Dustin Elliott and Steven Stroobants before the Rams had scored.
5-13 - Beauden Rinaldi
Spring Gully v Mandurang
February 27
Rinaldi spun Spring Gully to a massive 174-run win over Mandurang in their February 27 battle.
After cracking 262 batting first the Crows then took just 21.2 overs to bowl the Rangas out for 88.
Only four bowlers were required for the Crows, with Rinaldi's 5-13 off 5.2 overs the highlight performance.
The Rangas lost their last seven wickets for just 21 runs, with Rinaldi taking five of the wickets during the collapse.
5-14 - Chris Sole
Strathdale-Maristians v Bendigo United
February 27
The Redbacks had no answer to the sheer pace of the Suns' star international paceman, who jagged 5-14 off seven overs as Bendigo United was steamrolled for just 52 chasing 154 at Bell Oval.
Sole claimed five of the first six wickets to fall, with three of his scalps unassisted - two lbw and one bowled.
5-14 - Jayden Laubsch
Marong v California Gully
February 27
The Panthers' Laubsch enjoyed a day out with the ball at the expense of California Gully.
The opening bowler was both economical and damaging with 5-14 off eight overs in an innings where the Cobras were knocked over for just 65.
Laubsch ripped through the Cobras' top-order, taking five of the first six wickets on what was a career-best day with the ball.
