"Delly" made his mark in junior basketball as a point guard for the Bendigo Braves before going on to win an NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers and an Olympic bronze medal.
On Sunday, Matthew Dellavedova dominated in a different ball sport - tennis.
It wasn't Maryborough's Matthew Dellavedova, it was his second cousin Matthew Dellavedova who stormed into the main draw of the Bendigo International professional tennis event with an impressive qualifying win.
Dellavedova, from Queensland, defeated Thomas Pavlekovich Smith 6-1, 6-4 to earn a main draw first round clash with Argentina's Facuna Mena.
Dellavedova is ranked 1542 in the world, with Mena ranked 209.
Australians Koby Pearson and Aaron Addison earned the other two qualifying berths in the main draw.
The 16 seeded players in the men's draw earn a first round bye and advance straight to the round of 32.
It's a bumper day of men's matches on Monday, with 14 first round matches to be played across three courts, starting at 10am.
Dellavedova is the final match of the day on court two.
One of the feature matches on day one is the clash between Australian Li Tu and Italian Lorenzo Giustino.
Giustino is ranked 207 in the world, while Tu is ranked 521. Their match is the final game of the day on centre court.
The highlight match at 10am in round one is American Michael Mmoh, ranked 239 in the world, taking on Denmark's Mikael Torpegaard, who is ranked 231 in the world.
The final make-up of the Bendigo International women's singles draw is still to be determined.
The final eight qualifying positions will be decided on Monday.
Six young Aussies kept their main draw hopes alive with impressive round one qualifying wins on Sunday.
Youngster Bridget Mihulka edged out fellow Aussie Leann Serna in a super tie-breaker 6-4, 2-6, 10-3.
Jelena Cvijanovic outgunned another Aussie Emily Tinker 6-4, 6-0.
Tianyu Dong, Michaele Haet, Stefani Webb and Marla-Sheba Mukama were the other Australian players to advance.
One of Monday's eight qualifiers will face the daunting task of playing Coco Vandeweghe in the main draw.
The American, who is seeded six for the Bendigo International, is on the comeback trail from injury.
Vandeweghe made the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the US Open in 2017
The women's main draw has 32 players and the seeded players don't get a first round bye.
Number one seed Cristina Bucsa, from Spain, has drawn German Katharina Gerlach in the first round.
The duo have met three times previously, with Bucsa holding a 2-1 advantage.
Second seed Rebeka Masarova, also from Spain, will open up against Arianne Hartono from the Netherlands.
Monday's play starts at 10am. Ticket prices start at $5 for an adult daily pass or $25 for a weekly all-access ticket. Junior tickets start at $5 for a daily pass and $15 for weekly admission.
