GREATER Bendigo recorded seven new COVID-19 cases on Monday as it inched closer to its 1000th case, while Castlemaine North's school cluster grows again.
The Bendigo municipality has officially had 997 cases, the Department of Health says.
The increase would have meant Greater Bendigo marked its 1000th case on Tuesday but the department has revised its figures down by three.
Those changes can happen for a number of reasons including because contact tracers receive new information, though it is unclear exactly why the department revised its statistics for three cases that were included in previous tallies.
There are currently 77 active COVID-19 cases in the Greater Bendigo area, according to the latest figures.
One of the newest cases is linked to Bendigo's 3550 postcode, four to the regional 3551 area and one to Eaglehawk's 3556.
One case is connected to Heathcote's 3523 postcode.
Another 14 cases have been found in the Mount Alexander Shire as the Castlemaine North Primary School cluster grows by seven.
The cluster of 56 cases remains the largest in the state for a second consecutive day.
The Lockington Consolidated School's cluster is now the sixth largest with 37 cases.
Strathdale's Victory Christian College cluster is the 40th largest, with 13 cases.
Elsewhere in the central Victorian region, the Campaspe Shire recorded 10 extra cases and Macedon Ranges five.
The Central Goldfields Shire, Gannawarra and Loddon Shires recorded no new cases.
Earlier
VICTORIA has recorded 1245 new cases and six new deaths.
A total of 392 people spent the day in Victorian hospitals with the virus or its complications, including 73 in intensive care and 43 on ventilators.
Health workers processed 66,888 tests and gave out 14,483 vaccination doses.
Greater Bendigo could reach its 1000th COVID-19 case of the pandemic today. The municipality registered its 993rd on Monday.
The latest figures will be released later on Tuesday.
New South Wales' daily COVID-19 numbers remained above 2500 on Monday and a leading immunologist warned Sydney was "sleepwalking into a disaster" without immediate action.
Dan Suan, a clinic immunologist and researcher at Sydneys Garvan Institute of Medical Research, warned the city could be in crisis in January as Omicron cases grew and Delta kept spreading.
NSW Health is urging people to keep wearing masks indoors, but Premier Dominic Perrottet remains reluctant to reintroduce mask mandates that were eased last week, saying it was time for "personal responsibility".
"We are treating the people of our state like adults," he said on Monday.
