GREATER Bendigo is closing in on its 1000th COVID-19 case since the pandemic began as a Castlemaine cluster becomes the biggest in the state.
Health workers uncovered another two cases in Greater Bendigo on Sunday and now say there have been 993 since early 2020.
The number of active COVID-19 cases in the municipality has fallen slightly to 76.
Elsewhere in the region, the Loddon Shire recorded one new case, Campaspe six, the Central Goldfields one and the Macedon Ranges one.
Mount Alexander Shire recorded an extra four.
A cluster linked to that municipality's Castlemaine North Primary School is the largest in the state.
It how has 49 cases, up from 41 the day before, making it larger than a camping facility at Foster North in Gippsland.
To Bendigo's north, a cluster linked to Lockington North has 33 active cases.
Another 14 are currently linked to Strathdale's Victory Christian College.

VICTORIA has recorded another 1302 COVID-19 cases as New South Wales breaks Australian records.
Four hundred and six people are currently in Victorian hospitals with health conditions related to or intensified by the virus, including 81 in intensive care and 43 on ventilators.
No-one died from COVID-19 or its complications on Sunday.
Health workers did 71491 tests and gave out 4844 vaccinations.
Greater Bendigo recorded another 16 cases.
It was the second day of double-digit additions after a week in which the increase ranged from four to nine cases.
The municipality currently has 79 active cases in total, a tally that has been trending steadily upwards since December 10.
Case numbers are still well down on the 250 reached at the height of the area's Delta outbreak in October and November.
In New South Wales, 2566 new cases were revealed on Sunday.
It was the second consecutive day the state had posted a record for the number of daily increases.
The state broke the national record for a state or territory the day before when it registered 2482 cases.
The federal government is being urged to speed up booster vaccination rollouts given the spread of the Omicron variant through parts of the nation.
