The teenager was at a holiday rental property on the foreshore of Lake Nagambie on December 4 to celebrate his sister's wedding.
A Victoria Police statement read at the Victorian Coroners Court directions hearing on Wednesday said the boy was part of a group of between 15 and 20 guests who had been out to lunch in Nagambie earlier in the day and returned to the property to continue celebrating.
Approximately 4.30pm the boy entered the water of Lake Nagambie and swam out a distance about 100 metres from the shore before he started to struggle and call out for help.
One of the guests called triple zero while another guest swam out to attempt to retrieve him from the water. Despite the guest's efforts, the boy became submerged and was unable to be located.
Police arrived on the scene about 5.10pm and a member of the first attending police unit entered the water to try to locate the boy. Police search and rescue attended and searched for him until approximately 12.30am the following day and recommenced the search at 5am.

About 9.05am the search and rescue divers located the boy's body and removed him from the water.
Ms Jamieson confirmed that Leading Senior Constable Jason Woosham would investigate the matter and provide a briefing to her by April 14, 2022.
The identity of the teenager is unable to be published for legal reasons.
