The first train pulled up on time to a welcome from a platform full of people at about 9.45am.
It was a celebration for the town which has been without a functioning train station for many years.
Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said the Goornong community was excited at the prospect of having access to train services.
"It was a great day at Goornong today," she said. "It is so much easier to close things but a lot of work has gone in to getting this station open.
"The train line from Echuca was built in 1864 and station closed in 1979.
"Having a train station here means there are options for people as to how they travel. It gives them more options for job or education opportunities they are looking for."
Almost 20 services a week will stop at the station which is the first of three new stations being built in the area.
The others will be built at Huntly by the end of 2022 and Raywood mid-2023.
