Regional Rail Victoria has asked the City of Greater Bendigo to shift the official boundary between Bagshot and Huntly.

That is because a new train station near Wakeman Road is not technically being built in Huntly.

Government group Geographic Names Victoria has said it would support naming the station after Huntly if the boundary moved, arguing it is important for emergency services that are trying to navigate the area and for community connection.

Councillors will decide whether to greenlight the new boundaries when they meet on Monday.

Council officers say it would align with the city's plans for the rapidly growing suburb, parts of which are expected to spread through a section of land currently within Bagshot's bounds.

Ten people objected to the change, with some arguing the name was part of the area's history.

One person said there was currently no problem with emergency services finding their way around the area and that it felt like the change was really about the state government trying to fulfill an election promise to put a train station in Huntly.

They argued the name change debate fed into a larger need for a well-planned strategy for suburban development in Bagshot.

Other objectors argued the proposal was really about appeasing developers.

Another 127 people supported the idea of renaming part of Bagshot. Some of them argued the station would be easier to identify if it was in Huntly.

Others said it would help improve the sense of community among people living in the relatively new Providence and Viewpoint housing estates.

Building works on the train station unofficially known as Huntly's began in September.
