Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives continue to investigate and appeal for public assistance following a fatal collision in Diggers Rest yesterday.
A two-year-old Caulfield South girl, a rear seat passenger in a car carrying four people, sadly died at the scene.
A 35-year-old man, a 37-year-old woman and a one-year-old girl, from the same vehicle and all from Caulfield South, were taken to hospital.
The woman and girl remain in hospital in a critical condition and the man remains in hospital in a stable condition.
A man driving a Toyota Hilux, aged 62 from South Melbourne, was trapped under the truck until freed by emergency services.
He has also been taken to hospital in a critical condition.
Two people in another vehicle escaped serious injury.
The truck driver, a 42-year-old Donald man has been released pending further enquiries.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The Melbourne-bound lanes of the Calder Freeway have been re-opened near Bulla-Diggers Rest Road, Diggers Rest following a serious collision.
The Department of Transport thanked motorists for their patience as emergency services conducted investigations and crews worked to clear the incident from the road.
Three people have been taken to hospital and one person has died following a fatal collision on the Calder Freeway this afternoon.
Ambulance Victoria has confirmed a woman is fighting for her life after being airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in critical condition.
Of the other two patients taken to hospital, a child whose condition is unknown has been taken to the Royal Children's Hospital and a man in serious condition has been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Detectives from Major Collision Investigation Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the serious collision which occurred near Diggers Rest at 2.30pm.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said they believe a truck carrying grain collided with a number of vehicles on the Calder Freeway near the Bulla Road overpass.
"A rear seat passenger, in a car carrying four people, died at the scene," the spokesperson said.
"Two people from that vehicle were taken to hospital in a critical condition. A man in another vehicle was trapped under the truck until freed by emergency services.
"He has also been taken to hospital in a critical condition.
"Two people in another vehicle escaped serious injury.
The male driver of the truck is currently in custody and assisting police with their inquiries, the spokesperson said.
All city-bound lanes of the freeway are currently closed at Bulla-Diggers Rest Road.

Victoria Police are currently re-directing traffic and drivers will exit and immediately re-enter the freeway via the exit and entry ramps.
