The books and lessons were among grants given out to 18 recipients last night in the third round of funding from YMCA Bendigo’s Community Strengthening Fund.
More than $6000 went toward the grants, which help underprivileged members of the community.
Bendigo Regional YMCA chief executive Michael Bailey said it had been the biggest contribution to date from the fund.
“We’ve been extremely well supported by the community, with the number of events we’ve held to raise money,” he said.
“The emphasis now is providing opportunities for people that may not have been available to them.”
The presentation was made at the Peter Krenz Leisure Centre to groups including Smoke House (CFA Community Education Group), Horizon House and Scope Specialist Services.
Mr Bailey said the grants had been a huge boost to previous recipients.
“It’s about looking to do things outside your typical environment and if you can motivate someone and give them opportunities, that’s a huge help.”
