The Nationals MP for Nicholls made the announcement on Friday.

The former Geelong Cats player coached the Fremantle Dockers before arriving at VFL team the Diggers in 2002.

Mr Drum was elected to Victoria's parliament that year.

He represented an area of northern Victoria that included Bendigo and served as both a sports and veterans' affairs minister in premier Denis Napthine's coalition government.

Mr Drum resigned that post in 2016 to run for federal parliament and was soon elected to represent a seat encompassing Rochester, Echuca, Shepparton and an area stretching south to Broadford.

He said 2022 would be the time to resign.

"Having served for 14 years in the Victorian Parliament and the last six years in the Federal Parliament, I am very aware that this is a job where anything less than 110 per cent is doing a disservice to the people who have put their faith in you to represent them," he said.

Mr Drum said that one of his proudest achievements was helping secure $126 million for a bridge linking Echuca and Moama.

"[It was] something the community had waited more than half a century for," he said.
