He finished the week with a Melbourne Renegades contract for the Big Bash League.

The former Bendigo Cricket Club left-hander joins the Renegades as an injury replacement player for former Australian Test star Shaun Marsh.

"I thought if I was going to get picked up it was more likely to be the Renegades,'' Seymour said.

"The Stars' squad is pretty full whereas the Renegades have a few players away for the first part of the tournament. I had the opportunity to play for the Stars Academy and try to make some runs which was good."

Seymour smashed a fine 70 for the Stars Academy against the Renegades Academy earlier this week and backed that up with a stunning 59 off 22 balls when batting at number four for the Renegades against the Stars in a trial game at the Junction Oval on Friday.

"There was a good platform from the opening batsmen,'' Seymour said.

"I was fortunate to come in and play with some freedom. I was able to take advantage of the new power surge rule that's come in.

"That number four spot, or being flexible at number three, to keep that left-hand, right-hand combination going is probably what they're looking at for me.

"With only a four-over powerplay they don't try to be too aggressive early. The way the teams play it now is they look to be only two wickets down at the 10-over mark, use the power surge and backend the innings.

"My role will be to control it in the first 10 overs and set it up for guys like Nabi and Will Sutherland to tee off at the end."

Performances and the club's injury list will dictate how long Seymour stays with the Renegades this summer.

"Initially, it is only until Shaun Marsh gets back, but there is some flexibility there,'' Seymour said.

"If Shaun Marsh comes back and they want to keep me, they can squeeze me in for someone else. Marcus Harris is away with the Australian Test squad, so there's a spot there or if there's other injuries they can change it up there.

"If they don't want to keep me they can get rid of me. I'll just try to take my opportunities."

The Renegades' first BBL game is against the Adelaide Strikers at Marvel Stadium on Tuesday night.
