Last season's winner of the Geoff Major Rising Star award, Liam Shadbolt from Bendigo Harriers was in top form at the high jump.
Shadbolt, 14, cleared the two-metre mark and in the process broke the Bendigo Centre record for the under-15 age group.
The talented teenager from near Swan Hill was two centimetres away from the Victorian under-15 record.
At hammer throw, Hailey Stubbs from Bendigo Harriers achieved a mark of 36.17 metres to set a Bendigo under-14 record.
Stubbs is from Kyneton and has shown great form in the opening rounds of the AVSL 2021-22 campaign.
Eaglehawk's Craig Graham set a Bendigo 50-plus record with a mark of 35.65 metres.
Another highlight of the hammer was the performance of Craig Graham's daughter, Olivia who hit a mark of 50.64m.
Feature event on the track was the Eaglehawk Floral Boutique-sponsored Ern Hammer Memorial 3000m.
The 7 1/2 lap contest drew 15 starters for the non-AVSL scoring race.
A multiple winner of Bendigo Athletics Club championships, Ricky Ermel from Bendigo Harriers raced from the 1.20 mark and charged to victory in 12:13.66.
Shepparton's Glenn McMillan was the second backmarker from 4.55 and put in a great fight to be runner-up in 9:26.44. Third placegetter was Harriers' veteran Jill Wilkie in 11:15 from the 3:10 mark as clubmate and consistent distance runner Anne Buckley was fourth in 12:16 off a 2:10 mark.
University Pride's Ned Buckell raced from the backmark of 5:40 and put in a strong showing to be fifth in 8:54.16.
South Bendigo's Emma Berg led the way in discus with 39.01m.
A brilliant competitor in shot put and discus, Berg has played a key role in the development of clubmante Jasper Seymour.
Through Berg's coaching, Seymour has surpassed his previous best by more than five metres.
The 12-year-old reached 34.49m at Saturday's meet.
On the track, South Bendigo's Oliver Muggleton and Eaglehawk's Kye Mason fought out a quality 200m in the windy conditions.
It was Muggleton who charged to victory in 22.93 from Mason in 23.03.
The first of the women's 200m heats was a showdown between Eaglehawk's Laura Kadri and Bendigo Harriers' Abbey Conquer.
Conquer did that in 27.06 as Kadri clocked 27.32.
SIBLINGS SHINE IN MELBOURNE
THE Tickell siblings, Logan and Chelsea starred at last Thursday night's opener to the Victorian Milers running season at the Box Hill track.
Logan, 14, raced in the D-grade 3000m and clocked a superb time of 8:48.13 to be fourth in the 7 1/2 lap duel.
The rising star from South Bendigo Athletics Club broke the Bendigo Centre's residential record of 8:56.53 for under-16s set by University's Jayden Padgham at Lakeside Stadium last February.
It was a dramatic improvement by Tickell who set the under-15s record of 9:04.33 at Box Hill on April 1 this year.
A highlight of the women's D-grade 800m was the run by Chelsea Tickell.
The 12-year-old achieved a time of 2:25.02 to be second.
A big night of racing included the women's A-grade 3000m in which University's Nicolette Lesberg ran 10:08.82 to be 14th.
Bendigo Harriers' clubmates Brett Gilligan and David Morrissey ran 2:12.74 and 2:17.56 to be 7th and 11th in the G-grade 800m.
Next round of the Victorian Milers season will be on December 16 at Box Hill.
Round three is at Box Hill on January 20 and will be followed by Lakeside on February 8 and the season finale on March 10 at Murrumbeena.
