The digital campaign puts the spotlight on the different ways people define respect by asking people to share pictures of them with a sign answering the question 'To me, respect is...'.
To participate in the initiative all you have to do is take a photo of yourself or your friends holding up your definition of respect and post it online.
Ms Thomas has also asked for people to email the photos to mary-anne.thomas@parliament.vic.gov.au to help create an artwork to commemorate this year's 16 Days of Activism.
The initiative ties in with the Victorian theme of this year's 16 Days of Activism campaign; Respect women: Call it out.
We know violence against women and girls starts with a lack of respect for women and girls, Ms Thomas said.

Family and gendered violence affects all communities. And while we have come so far, we know we still have a way to go. We each have a role to play in ending violence in our state and, through this campaign, our resolve is only strengthened, she also said.
The Macedon MP acknowledged the important role local family violence services played in raising awareness in local communities when she sat down with Centre for Non-Violence staff in Kyneton last week to discuss the on-going social issue of gender based violence.
"Congratulations to the local organisations, service clubs and local governments who are supporting the global campaign, 16 Days of Activism to end gendered violence," she said.
"The [Victorian] Government is proud to support the Centre for Non-Violence deliver their important services here in Kyneton. I can assure our community that trusted, confidential and free family violence services are available locally."
