However, a last-minute call from Bendigo Spirit head coach Tracy York would change her mind.
The 2017 WNBL Championship player with the Sydney Uni Flames is now set as a key player on the Spirit's roster.
"I am pretty excited about the season, especially as I really didn't think I'd be playing," Boag said.
In addition to the championship with Sydney, Boag's experience includes a decorated US college career where she was named All-American twice while playing NCAA second division with Minot State.
Boag might be new to the Spirit, but there's plenty of familiar faces on the team who she has worked with before while at Sydney - Leilani Mitchell, Cassidy McLean and assistant coach Mark Alabakov.
"Having friendly faces always makes it easier to settle in a new team environment," Boag said.
Boag is more than keen to share her expertise with the new squad, especially during the past few weeks which has been a productive pre-season.
"Now that I am one of the oldest on the team I want to bring my experience to help our younger players rise to perform at their best," Boag said.
"Show them how to step up, attack and improve."
Spirit coach Tracy York said Boag possessed the perfect credentials to fit in with the 2021-22 team roster.
Spirit recently had a practice match against the Southside Flyers where the team endured a 68-92 loss.
Maddie Garrick led the way offensively with 23 points, while Anneli Maley had 15 points and 20 rebounds.
Spirit return to the basketball court on Thursday at the Bendigo Stadium for another pre-season clash against Melbourne Boomers.
