The Macedon Ranges Shire has warned people not to believe anyone who calls them unsolicited after being told of residents being targeted.
"These are scam/phishing calls," the council said in a statement.
"At this point in time, council is not currently conducting any telephone surveys."
The council said anyone asked to complete a telephone survey should check the details of the organisation calling them and ask for their survey project's name.
"If you have any doubts ask the caller to call you back, and then check with Council on 5422 0333," the shire said.
"It is important to never respond to unsolicited messages and NEVER provide your personal and financial details, or give a stranger remote access to your device or computer."
