Wilson being named the winner and presented with the gold statue by Damian Drum MLC capped the 47th gala awards presentation, which was proudly sponsored by bankmecu at Bendigo Town Hall.
There were 16 finalists across more than a dozen sporting pursuits in the running to be crowned Sports Star.
Wilson became the first BMX ace to win the prestigious title.
“My legs are shaking, I can barely believe it,’’ Wilson sad.
“I didn’t expect it. It’s something that I’ve always hoped to have won.”
Wilson dedicated the win to her sons, Aston, 8, and Carter, 4.
A star BMX rider as a junior, Wilson gave up the sport for 13 years before her children inspired her to get back on the bike.
“We go on rides together,’’ she said of her children.
“I ride to kinder with Carter; it doesn’t even feel like training because we enjoy doing it together.
“I can’t believe I had that long out of the sport because I’m so passionate about it.”
Wilson earned the award after a hot run of form on BMX tracks across Victoria, Cairns and at the world titles in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Victory in the cruiser class at the world titles in July was the No.1 high of another superb year.
Wilson was runner-up in the 17-plus open final in the 20-inch class on the Denmark track.
Wilson won the cruiser and 20-inch finals at the national BMX titles in Cairns and was undefeated in the Track Attack Series, a series of six meetings against 20 riders from across Australia and New Zealand.
“It’s a wonderful achievement from all the monthly award winners,’’ Wilson said.
“There’s so many great achievements.”
Wilson’s next goals are the Australian titles at Mt Gambier in April and the world championships in May.
