White Ribbon Australia executive director Brad Chilcott said turning this national tragedy around would require real, long-term social and cultural transformation - and men willing to reflect on their role in achieving that change.
"On Friday, thousands of Australians will come together at events across the country to put the epidemic of family domestic violence front and centre on the social agenda," he said.
"These events aren't the cure-all solution, but it's a place to start, a line in the sand."
White Ribbon Australia is a part of a global social movement working to eliminate gendered violence.
The movement works through a primary prevention approach in communities, schools and workplaces across the country.
Through programs and campaigns, they engage with men to become active in the social change needed to stop men's violence against women and children.
As the sun sets on White Ribbon Day, 26 major landmarks across the country will be lit up in white, in solidarity with the campaign's focus on the action men can take to end violence against women.
Some of these landmarks include:
- The MCG and AAMI Park
- Federation Square
- Adelaide Oval and Railway Station
- Perth's Matagarup, Joondalup and Mount Street Bridges
- Northbridge Tunnel and the Digital Tower at Yagan Square
- The GABBA and Suncorp Stadium
- Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville
- Telstra Tower and Canberra Times Fountain
- Darwin's Parliament House
- The North Bank Pedestrian Bridge in Launceston
- Rose Garden Bridge, Railway Roundabout Fountain and Cardinal Lights in Hobart
- The Supreme Court and Todd Street Mall in Alice Springs
