The seven-year-old gelding's 2.5-length victory came with a modest, but crucial ratings boost, ensuring him a simpler passage into some future races.

Vanderfeen said getting Fair Go accepted into races had been a huge task given his low rating.

He arrived at her Bendigo property a few months ago as a 46-rater.

The son of Anacheeva has since had four starts with his win at Wangaratta preceded by a third at Swan Hill and a fourth at Echuca.

A consistent run of form from the frontrunning gelding has seen his rating jump to 52.

That has Vanderfeen eyeing a benchmark 52 over 1476m on Penshurst Cup day on November 20 as a follow-up.

"At least he is guaranteed a run - that's been our problem all the time, being such a low-rating horse you struggle to get a run," she said.

"We've been balloted out of a few races, but that's just the way it is.

"He's up there now, but he was only a 46 when we got him.

"I'm sure he (Fair Go) likes living with us. He's in the paddock - he didn't like being boxed very much I don't think.

"He's improved each time he's run for me .... he probably should have won at Swan Hill.

"Even if his first run (a 10th at Kyneton) was a lot better than it seemed because he was six-wide the trip. You can't do much when you are out there, especially at Kyneton.

"We learned a lot from that. We put the winkers on him and he has improved since them."

Fair Go was ridden by Bendigo-based jockey John Robertson and is part-owned by Vanderfeen and Craig and Stacey Kirkpatrick.

Vanderfeen said Penshurst loomed as the seven-year-old's final run before a spell.

Her stayer Sentry Rock is nominated for this Saturday's picnic meeting at Yea.
