"On Sunday, October 24 I had gone outside to the front garden to tie up more bulb greenery,'' she said.
"When I noticed, with disbelief, my front gate was missing. It was there on Friday, October 22."
Ms Colthurst reported the theft to police and canvassed her neighbours for CCTV footage, but she didn't have to worry for long.
A neighbour spotted the gate a few days later among a pile of dumped bric-a-brac in the Garden Gully Recreation Reserve while walking her dog.
"You can imagine my delight and astonishment when she rang to say she had found my gate and had left it on my veranda,'' Ms Colthurst said.
The gates were an original feature of the house, which was built for one of Bendigo's early mayors - James Henry Curnow. He was on the council from 1901 until about 1930 and was made mayor five times. He was also the founding member and later chairman of the town's sewerage authority. A fountain in his honour is located at Rosalind Park.
Ms Colthurst said her son had rehung the gate for her over the weekend, where she hopes it will remain.
She has made a zine about the gate's adventures to mark the occasion.
